In America and other countries throughout the world, there is a lot of talk on how can one be defined as a journalist?

The answer is quite simple.  If you send written work to a newspaper and or magazine and other publications, then by definition, you are a journalist.

The Americans are also advocating a licensing system so that journalist can be licensed.

But there is a problem with licensing journalist as with today’s multitude of writers and the multi-media platforms that are available to people who are journalists by the nature of their work such as print, television, radio and the internet licensing such persons would be difficult and then one has to question who would oversee the licensing of such people?

And then there is the freelance journalist who may have worked for one or more organisation on a full-time basis and has since left their full-time job as a journalist and become a freelancer, which means that they have to secure their own work and write for one or several media outlets to ensure that they can sell their work and provide an acceptable income.

As a freelancer, you must be able to come up with several ideas and write according to the market place that you are interested in writing for.

There is a potential job for journalist everywhere and that can be with any newspaper or any magazine, newsletters, press releases and lots more but it is best to have an ideas file and below is a copy of my ideas file:

So in a nutshell, if you write if you write for any company and that can be a newsletter or a press release or a write ‘copy’ to the required standard for the publication you are writing for than can be published in any of the modern formats like print, and online, and even a newsletter for a company or a group for financial reward, your therefore a journalist, and contrary to popular belief, there is no mandatory law saying that you must be have a University degree to be a journalist, but it does help to have some form of University qualification, because then you have some knowledge of media law, but it is not essential that you have such a qualification.

You are a journalist if you write to newspapers magazines and other periodicals for a living.Image
